Growing up I remember playing ‘Sims 3’ for the first time.  My mind was blown to pieces when I found out that if I played as a female character, I could flirt and be with other female characters. That was probably a defining moment where I knew that I was not your average hetero teenager. Since then video games have come a long way in terms of supporting queer storylines as well as showcasing explicitly queer characters.

If you’re also bored with the mundane heteronormativity in video games, here’s a list of six  video games supporting a queer storyline.

Sims

Whether you’re playing the first edition of the game or the fourth, the one thing you can count on is the ‘Sims binge’ you’ll go through. The whole point of the game is to give you control over what you want your Sim to do and who you want them to be. The game leaves you, the player, with enough legroom to make your Sim as queer as you want them to be. Sims 4 even removes gender-specific character restrictions.

Mass Effect

Mass effect has always had the option for the player to have queer relationships. It however, really queers things up with its vast set of queer characters, ranging from the franchise’s first trans character, Hainly Abrams to two pansexual squad members, a lesbian doctor, a gay engineer, and two bisexual side characters, in it’s recent Andromeda.

Life Is Strange

This particular episodic graphic adventure game comes in three parts, Life Is Strange, Life Is Strange: Before the Storm (the prequel to Life Is Strange), and Life Is Strange 2 (set to be released between the months of August and September).  It is centered around two characters, Chloe Price and Max Caulfield in their hometown of Arcadia Bay. Depending on the choices you make throughout the game it can very well end in Max and Chloe kissing.

Dragon Age Series

Although all parts of the Dragon Age series gives you the option to form same-sex relationships with other characters, Dragon Age: Inquisition is something that most video game journalists still applaud vehemently, owing to Dorian, “gaming’s breakout gay character”. Apart from that Dragon Age also includes a trans man as a character known as Krem. Although never specifically mentioned as trans, his storyline reveals that he was assigned female at birth.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Released this year itself, this edition of Assassin’s Creed doesn’t limit your relationships to its previous traditional heterosexual counterparts. Whether you play as Alexios or Kassandra, the storyline and choices you have to make are the same.

Butterfly Soup

A visual novel game more popular in the indie gaming scene, Butterfly Soup deals with issues relating to gender, toxic parenting, friendship, mental health and sexuality, to name a few. It also has a healthy amount of millennial and queer humour that’s bound to be a great pick me up if you’re going through a rough patch.

Here’s hoping you don’t get as addicted as I did!
